The Quick Way to Open Files with EL Extension

Different software packages use different file extensions, so if you can't open the EL file, it could be because:

  • You don't have the associated software on your computer (Emacs Lisp Source Code is the most popular software package that uses EL file).

  • You may have Emacs Lisp Source Code but your computer is not configured to associate EL files with the relevant software.

  • The file is corrupt.

If You Don't Have Emacs Lisp Source Code

In order to open your EL file, you will have to download Emacs Lisp Source Code or another similar software package.

If Your Computer is Not Configured to Open EL Files

If you have the relevant software, but your computer still won't open the software, you will have to change the file associations on Windows or Mac. Depending on your operating system, you can ensure that your computer always open EL files using Emacs Lisp Source Code or another program of your choice that uses EL files.

If that still doesn't work, you can get in touch with your software developer to find out what you can do. You can contact any of these developers for more information or assistance:

Emacs Lisp Source Code Free Software Foundation Inc.

If the EL File is Corrupt

In some instances, you may receive an error message stating that the file is corrupt. If you have tried all of the above, and it still doesn't work, download or request a new copy to see if that works.

Open EL File the Easy Way

If you don't want to download Emacs Lisp Source Code (for whatever reason), and the other options also don't work... that's okay!

Even though some EL files must be opened in a program for which it was developed (binary format), you may still be able to open it in a universal file viewer such as File Magic. Download File Magic now from the Microsoft Store and open your EL file!
