Why Can’t I Open I Files?

Computer programs are compatible with a variety of different file extensions, and many extensions work with multiple programs. There are several reasons why you may not be able to open I files on your computer. If you double-click the file and nothing happens, or an error message appears, consider the following possibilities.

You Don’t Have the Right Program

There are specific computer programs that are compatible with I files, and you may not have one installed on your computer. The most common programs are Unknown Apple II File, APLAC Source Code Data File, and C++ Preprocessor Intermediate File. Try installing one or more of these programs and see if you can open the file. You can download these programs from either the developers’ websites, the Microsoft Store / Apple App Store, or popular download portals.

You’re Not Sure of the File Type

Knowing the file type can help you open I files. Different file extensions can be associated with different types of files. Developer Files usually use the I extension. You might have a program installed on your computer that is designed to open this type of file. A good first step is trying to open the file in that program.

If you don’t know what type of file the I file is, finding this information is simple. Please follow the instructions below depending on the type of operating system you are using.

On a Windows Computer:
  1. Right-click the file icon.
  2. Select “Properties” from the drop-down menu.
  3. Find the file type listed under “Type of File”.
On a Mac:
  1. Right-click on the file icon.
  2. Select “More Info” from the drop-down menu.
  3. Look for the file type listed under “Kind”.

You Need Help From the Developer

If no programs will open the I file, you can ask software developers for help. They know their software better than anyone, and they might be able to explain why you can’t open the file. See the chart below to find the developers for the most common programs used to open I files.
