1. Download another program.

Different file extensions work with different programs, and it can be difficult to figure out which program opens which files. Here are a few programs that usually work with PIG files:

  • Unknown Apple II File
  • Lucas Arts Dark Forces WAD File
  • Descent Texture File
  • Ricoh IS30

You can download one of these programs from the software developer’s website.

2. Look at the file type.

The file type can sometimes tell you which program might open the file. If you have PIG files, they are most likely types of Game Files. A program that works with Game Files should open PIG files.

Don’t know the file type? You can find it by right-clicking the file and selecting “Properties” or “More Info.” The file type will be listed under “Type of File” or “Kind”.

3. Check with the software developer.

Try contacting the developer of one of the programs mentioned above. They can help you figure out why your PIG file won’t open. Some of the most common developers are listed below.

Software Developer
Unknown Apple II File found on Golden Orchard Apple II CD Rom
Lucas Arts Dark Forces WAD File Windows Programmer
Descent Texture File Microsoft Programmer
Ricoh IS30 Unknown

4. Install a universal file viewer.

Universal file viewers can open many different types of files, depending on the format. If your PIG file won’t open, try installing a universal file viewer like File Magic (Download). Some files aren’t compatible with universal file viewers. These files will only open in binary file format.
